Reviews Overview

Most Liked

The standout attraction at The Black Lion is undoubtedly its Steak and Ale pie, praised by many as one of the best in the country. The generous portions ensure that no one leaves hungry. Local ales and ciders add a unique flavor to the experience, each sip reflecting the rich brewing tradition of the area.

The pub’s welcoming atmosphere draws in a mixed crowd, from groups of friends enjoying a night out to solo diners savoring a quiet moment. The outdoor seating, dressed with vibrant flora, provides a stunning place to enjoy a drink, especially on sunny days. Many visitors appreciate the friendly service and the flexibility in menu choices, making it easy to cater to dietary preferences.

Most Disliked

While The Black Lion has garnered an impressive reputation, some patrons mention the occasional busyness, particularly during peak hours on weekends. The popularity can lead to longer wait times during dinner service.

Although the outdoor seating is beautiful, it can sometimes fill up quickly, leaving visitors to seek alternatives inside where the space may feel tight during busy hours. Additionally, some diners express a desire for a larger selection of vegetarian or vegan options beyond the traditional fare.

Every time I’m in England, I have to search out for the best Steak and Ale pie. The Black Lion certainly delivers! It may be one of the best pies I’ve had yet in all my time there! Not only was it a delicious meal, the pub itself is quite a great place with that traditional British pub feel! The bar keep and staff were quite friendly. The teammates and I had a great time! AND… bonus… they serve one of my favorite beers, John Smiths! Thanks Black Lion for such a great dinner! Will definitely be stopping by next time I’m in Hereford!

Fantastic overall experience. Well presented pub with a fantastic atmosphere and great food! The majority of the food was handmade and it all tasted delicious. Very high quality food and large portions. We were encouraged to customise the food we ordered which is a big help to those who have specific dietary requirements. The member of staff that greeted us upon entering the Black Lion was very friendly and created a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back soon! Thank you!

Just been here and what a find! On holiday from the North East and I've tried lots of steak and ale pies all over the country but this tops all of them! For size of pie and delicious gravy, great craic from behind the bar and really friendly atmosphere and great service. We could take our two dogs inside as the weather wasn't great but there's loads of room outside to eat and drink. Two car parks over the bridge for a 5 minute walk back to the pub, can't get vexed! If you live in the area or are just visiting, the Black Lion needs to be on your list. Thoroughly recommend and we'll be back before we head back North!

Just dropped in on spec for a lunchtime meal. Excellent service, very friendly staff, delicious food and great value. As of October 2024 you'll get a good sized meal for about a tenner. Good choice of ales etc. Location is perfect for visiting the cathedral and city. If you need an EV charger there's one about 100 meters up the road.

We didn't stop to eat as had already had an enormous breakfast earlier! Following an organ concert at the Cathedral, my friend and I stopped at The Black Lion for drinks. I was blown away by how beautiful the courtyard garden was with a vast array of excellently cared-for plants, flowers, hanging baskets, etc. This place really does have a beautiful situation and is comfortable, relaxed and spotlessly clean throughout; as were the gent's toilets, refreshingly! The staff were also really very nice indeed; friendly, talkative and very approachable. I'd not previously visited this pub before, but it'll be my stop-off after every concert visit in future, not to be missed. Easy access from what I could see (level access for wheelchair and frame users, e.g.. As mentioned, we didn't eat, but the food brought to other patrons looked fantastically presented and regret not having any appetite to sample it...though I shall next time! A truly pleasant experience and I was sad not to have had more time to spend.
